The Power of Place... The latest issue of Reis' e-newsletter, ReisCast, pointed me to an interesting article posted at www.reis.com by Joel Kotkin. Reporting on Network Solutions' domain name statistics, Kotkin writes about business location in our new economy. According to Kotkin, "... it's critical to realize that in the digital age the characteristics of a place are not less important, but even more so. As locational choice for employers becomes more elastic, the attributes of any given location grow more determinant. Firms end up not where they have to, but more often where they want to." ... And, I suppose that accounts for the extraordinary rents in places like New York and San Francisco. ... Go to Reis. Click Insights (at the top of home page), then Techscapes (in the left-hand column) and, finally, the "Domain Names" article. For the raw data, check out Network Solutions' new site, dotcom.com (yes, that's spelled correctly), "The Knowledge Center for the New Economy," at www.dotcom.com. Click the US Markets link under Facts and Stats in the left-hand column. Here you'll find, for example, that the top MSA's for dot-com registrations are (in order) Los Angeles--Long Beach, New York, Washington, DC--MD--VA--WV, Chicago and San Francisco. At the bottom of the US Markets page, you'll see a link to a US Map for a graphical representation. Cool. PikeNet Expo News ... What tools can tenants use to streamline the leasing process? Parade #2 at the PikeNet Expo will feature presentations by Offices2Share, Business Integration Group, Cubitz, ManagePath, NAIDirect, RealCentric and TenantWise. And later, visit their Exhibit Booths for personal demos. Register online. --Peter Pike |
