1. The Impact of Connectivity. From Andy Grove of Intel in Business Week, April 13, 1998: "Commerce, marketing, information, entertainmentall of these things are going to be impacted by the presence of a billion connected computers." And from John Chambers of Cisco Systems in the New York Times, April 11, 1998: "Companies and countries that will thrive in this Internet economy are those who change before the rest of the world realizes that they have to change." For a perspective on using technology to strengthen communication with your clients, read "Enterprise One to One" by Peppers and Rogers. Although it sounds counter intuitive, they demonstrate how, "In the long run, customizing your business to the requirements of individual customers will reduce your operating costs." Chapters 10 and 11 focus on the Internet. This book has been added to the PikeNet "bookstore." Use the link below. http://www.pikenet.com/about/books.html 2. Web Success--Swinerton Shows "Live" Building Progress. Swinerton & Walberg Property Services captures the progress of building construction using a camcorder and an older-model Macintosh computer to "grab" a video frame every five minutes between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. This image is then FTPd automatically to a web server and is available for viewing. Its a great example of how you can build interactivity (and interest) into a web presence. What about showing the activity in the lobby of your building? Or a live picture of your conference room (well, maybe not)? Or the traffic level on the streets adjacent to your office? Do you have a Web Success story? Send me e-mail. For hyperlinks to Swinertons web site, click the headline on the Billboard on the PikeNet home page or the Web Success Stories Index at the bottom of the page. http://www.pikenet.com/cgi- 3. Top Message Board Posts--Are REITs Overpaying? Robert H. Block, one of the nations leading experts on REIT securities, poses an interesting question, "Are [REITS] pulling back when they see overpriced properties?" in the REITs and Investment Advisors -/- REITs as Aggressive Buyers discussion. Deborah Schwartz, Managing Editor of Office & Industrial Properties Magazine, asks, "Does anyone have a program in place to electronically collect rent from multifamily tenants?" in the Software and Technology -/- Impact of Technology -/- Electronic Rent Collection discussion. Contribute your thoughts by posting a message in these Discussions. Click the Message Board Channel hyperlink or use the URL below. http://www.pikenet.com/cgi-bin/WebX 4. Web News. GE Capital will discontinue CRE-NET, its listing service, on May 10, 1998, as it continues to explore related Internet services. Donahue Schriber, a REIT specializing in retail properties in the Western states, has launched its attractive new web site. Information Decision Systems sells demographic information online. RealFund is the first Canadian REIT online. 5. Knowledge Base--Set Up Your "Virtual" Office at Netopia. Netopia makes it easy to create your "own" office on the web where you can exchange information privately with a client. With Netopias virtual office you can exchange files, conduct a videoconference and post messages, all with security protection. Ive posted some instructions in the PikeNet Knowledge Base. Click the icon at the top of the home page and go to the last question in the Web Related section. http://www.pikenet.com/ 6. PikeNet Message Board Fix. I fixed a bug that a couple of readers had found by deleting the "Login" hyperlink in the left-hand panel. Use the "Login" button at the bottom of the screen and you will not get a "Missing Template" error message. If you reload or refresh the page, you should see the Login hyperlink (but not the Login button below) disappear. If youre using Internet Explorer, youll need to empty your cache: View, Internet Options, General tab, Delete Files, OK, OK, Refresh.
