1. Jobs Online--The Wave of the Future? ... Last month visitors looked at over 2,500 screens in the Jobs and Consulting section of the PikeNet Message Boards. It's very popular, second only to the Buy, Sell, Lease section. ... So it was no surprise to receive a news release this week from NAIOP announcing the launch of their JobBank Service. In the last couple of Dispatches I've written about the importance of Internet access speeds, and a few people have written about their wonderful experience using cable modems (all in California: Palo Alto, Los Angeles and San Diego). ... My favorite is from Gerald Porter of Metrospace/CRESA-LA, who uses a cable modem with 1.5 Mbps speed. Porter writes, "I can run CoStar on my desktop at the office via pcAnywhere32 and my ISDN router connection to my office while sitting at home in front of my 36" Panasonic TV/SVGA Monitor." ... Yep, that's cool. But it will be three to five years before cable modems become common. That's a lifetime on the Internet. For now cable modems are a dream for most of us. 3. Web Success. ... Jack Peckham writes that he closed a $28.75 million net leased property recently. ... Peckham "posted the offering at the Peckham Boston Advisors (Real Estate Investments OnLine) web site earlier this year. Shortly after the posting Tom Rochford (Tom Rochford Real Estate, Lafeyette, CA) was 'browsing the Web searching for a property' for his client when he came upon Peckham's offering. The two connected via E-mail and phone and after the normal negotiating and due diligence periods the sale was completed." The property was a 160,000 square foot free standing office building leased to New England Telephone and Telegraph Company (Bell Atlantic) and the buyer was National Government Properties. ... Last week I wrote about aerial photos available at Microsoft's Terraserver at www.terraserver.microsoft.com. Several people wrote thinking that the URL might not be correct. But it is correct. Due to overwhelming demand, the site is sometimes impossible to access, even with a cable modem (!). According to press reports Microsoft is aware of the problem and is adding new servers....
