1. REITs Online--Part II. ... Last week I reported that Mack-Cali was the only one of three REITs that responded to an e-mail inquiring about office space in New Jersey. ... The other two, Equity Office and Boston Properties, did not respond and still have not responded, although Boston Properties did send me a copy of their 1997 annual report with no cover letter (and no reference in the report to a web site or e-mail address). Hmm.

Of course, the larger issue is that corporate real estate directors seeking information on space available will not want to visit multiple REIT sites anyway. So I'm wondering what Internet services REITs might endorse as listing sites to which they'll contribute information on space available? And, in the case of space listed by brokers, will they require their agents to publish that information on the web? Will REITs pay to post their data? How much? What role will existing publishers of space available data play in aggregating information that could be available on the web? Finally, how will the trade-off between price and quality of information be resolved? One thing is for sure. Firms competing in this area of the web will commit substantial capital.
